Summer Isles

The Summer Isles are an archipelago lying far to the south of Westeros, beyond the Summer Sea. Their people are coal-black of skin and renowned for their maritime skill, their love of bright colors, and their formidable archers, who wield great bows carved from goldenheart, a wood that only dragonbone can outrange. In the ports of the known world, Summer Islanders are easily recognized by their feathered cloaks and their distinctive ships, called swan ships for their graceful lines and white sails.

Geography and Culture

The Summer Isles are a tropical realm, warm and fertile, whose inhabitants have long been celebrated as sailors, traders, and warriors. Their culture prizes music, dance, and pageantry, and their warriors are among the finest archers in the world. The goldenheart bow, a weapon of exceptional power and range, is the hallmark of a Summer Islander archer; only a bow made of dragonbone can surpass it. The Summer Islanders are also known for their swan ships, swift and beautiful vessels that ply the trade routes between the Free Cities, Slaver's Bay, and the far reaches of the Jade Sea.

Role in the Narrative

In A Dance with Dragons, the Summer Isles appear primarily as a distant reference point. At the Merchant's House in Volantis, Quentyn Martell observes "coal-black Summer Islanders in feathered cloaks" mingling with traders from across the known world, a reminder of the archipelago's role as a source of exotic goods and skilled seamen. Later, in the Yunkish siege camp outside Meereen, Tyrion Lannister sees a Summer Islander among the fighters brought to the auction block, a man whose skin is "black as midnight" and whose jaw and half his cheek have turned to stone from greyscale—a grim fate that befalls him before he can be sold.

The Goldenheart Bow and Black Balaq

The most significant Summer Islander in the narrative is Black Balaq, a white-haired commander of archers in the Golden Company. Balaq leads a thousand bows, including fifty Summer Islanders armed with goldenheart longbows, the finest missile weapons in the company's arsenal. When Jon Connington launches his assault on Griffin's Roost, it is Balaq's archers who silence the castle's defenses, bringing down ravens and guards alike with deadly precision. The goldenheart bow's superiority is demonstrated when Balaq himself shoots down a raven from the maester's tower, a feat that underscores the weapon's legendary range and accuracy.

Trade and Travel

The Summer Isles are a source of luxury goods and skilled individuals who appear in the ports of the Free Cities and Slaver's Bay. Their swan ships are a common sight in harbors from Braavos to Volantis, and their sailors and merchants bring news and goods from the far south. The archipelago's distance from the central conflicts of the story means it remains a peripheral but evocative presence, a reminder of the vastness of the world beyond the wars of Westeros and Slaver's Bay.
